We are Informed that tho indignation so freely expressed by the residents of Gisborne at the pardoning of Te Kooti,- is as nothing compared to that felt by both Europeans and Maoris on the East Coast. Mr Bryce is fiercely anathematised, and threats are openly made as to what Te Kooti may expect should he venture that way. The Maoris are even worse than the pakehas fa their denunciations of the mean spirited, and contemptible action of the Government. In a ease at the Aberdare Police Court recently, in which a man named Hooker was ordered to contribute towards the maintenance of his fa'her, it was stated that the defendant's mother had thirty-two children. Defendant said that on three occasions she gave birth to twins, twice she had triplets, and afterwards four children at a birth. Mr Edwin Woon has been appointed creditors’ trustee in the case of the bankruptcy of Harry Karell, in accordance with an order signed by Mr G'reenwood, the Clerk of the District Court. According to the Registrar-General's last volume of New Zealand statistics there is " one beggar" in the colony, and Nelson is given as the dwelling place of that person.

Sir Arthur Gordon, we (Port) ohaerve from an English paper, has been taking great interest in some experiments at Aberdeen, in the way of pouring oil on the troubled waters. It is a pity he didn't take some lessons before coming to New Zealand. The Wellington correapondent of the Lyttelton Times telegraphs :—“ At Madame (jimonsens benefit performance at the Theatre Royal the " benenoiaire was the recipient of a handsome bouquet, thrown from the bex eeeupisd by the Mayor, and containing a cheque for £25, collected from various cltizene fa token of their esteem.”

Mr E- L. Peters advertises for the recovery of a horse lost from Mr E. F. Harris’s paddoek at Waimata. A reward ia offered for the recovery of the same.

The weather to-day haa been something dreadful so far ae the heat is concerned. Those who were compelled to attend at the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, evidently enjoyed themselves, Tho building tn question was more like a Turkish bath than anything else, and tho weepings, and wallings, and gnashing of teeth, on the part of the teamed Counsel, and the parties to the various suits was something dreadful to contemplate. Some of the members of bar are going to represent to the Government the necessity of having an enlargement of the Court House. We say that tho sooner this is done the better.

We are pleased to hear that His Worship the Mayor has arranged that the engine used fa connection with Oxenham's contract shall not run on the two race days. The importance of nur suggestion, when pointed out by Cr. Whinray at the last meeting of the Borough Council, was readily seen, and, with one exception, readily assented to by the Councillors. The solitary objector takes no interest fa racing, with the exception of the one event, " the race for gold.”

By an omission in a paragraph published yesterday people were led to believe that the Gisborne Recreation Ground had been invested fa the School Committee, whereas it should have read “ the Ormond Recreation Ground. We arc sorry for the mistake, as it has raised the ire of a few who have the interests of the people at heart, and are working to make our Recreation Ground a pleasant place of resnrt.

It has generally been understood that the bankruptcy of a Mayor deprived him of his office, but the “ Bay of Plenty Times ” publishes the following opinion.—“ We are disposed to think that bankruptcy does not disqualify the Mayor, and as Mayor he may act as Councillor notwithstanding Section No. 61, —Hzskkth and Richmond.” A few years ego, the then Mayor of Wellington lost his office through making an assignment for the benefit of his creditors. The funds of the Napier Hospital are in a very bad state. The " Hawke’s Bay Herald ” says:—"The hospital dustman has struck as there ia no money to pay him with. If the tradespeople do the same the hospital must be closed, and its patients, nearly 40 fa number, turned out: a very small matter doubtless to the Government compared to the judicious expenditure of a few thousand pounds on a political railway or road for the purchase of a Parliamentary vote.” Although, we, in Gisborne, have very little to boast about, we are somewhat better off than our neighbours. A large quantity of fancy goods, electroplate ware Ac., is now on view at Messrs Carlaw Smith and Co.'s mart. The goods are well worthy of inspection and will be sold tomorrow at noon. A recent visitor to Auckland informs us (Hawera Star) that there is an impression abroad in that city Chat Sir George Grey will succeed in gettidjj the present Ministry out of office next session. Sir George, he adds, never Appeared to be in better health than at present. The old Knight is certainly a wonderful man.
