Mails for Auckland, per Southern Cross, will close this evening (Wednesday), at 7 o’clock.
It is now stated that <iambetta was wounded in preventing his mistress from shooting herself because he had refused to recognise their natural son. The immediate cause of death was an old intestinal disease. Keller has been repeating his rope trick feat. At Grahamstown he bet £5O to £l, that no one could tie him up so that he could not release himself, An old man-o’-wars-man essayed the task, but in less than two minutes Kellar relieved himself of his bonds. In a case at the Aberdare Police Court the other day, in which a young man named Hooker was ordered to contribute towards the maintenance of hip father, it was stated that the defendant’s mother had had thirtytwo children. Defendant said that on three occasions she gave birth to twins, twice she had triplets, and afterwards four children at a birth.
At a meeting of householders, held at Waerenga-a-hika, on Monday evening, the following gentlemen were elected as a School Committe :— Messrs. Boland (chairman), Burnand. Curtis, Hamon, Hayden, Colebrook, and Cooper. The people of Waerenga-a-hika intend to hold a tea meeting and select ball, on the 31st instant, in the new school-house, the site for which was generously given by Allan McDonald, Esq., M.H.R. The object is the augmentation of the building fund, which is now about £4O in debt. The school building hag been erected by subscriptions from Messrs Boland, Hamon, Hayden, Colebrook, and J. Cooper, and we trust that the debt will soon be paid off, as it is too much to expect these gentlemen to bear the whole of the burden. The culvert in front of the present Union Bank premises is in such a condition that it is not unlikely an accident will occur, unless the wood work is repaired. One plank is completely gone, thus affording a first-class man-trap. Perhaps, when two or three legs are broken, and two or three civil actions follow, somebody will become alive to the fact that the culvert is dangerous, and that it would be as well to patch it up. No less than twelve bishops holding seats in the House of Lords are Septuagenarians. Two, the bishops of Chichester and Llandaff, are over 80 years of age. A new but ‘Bsreputable use has been found for Oamaru stone. The Oamaru Times says that a shipment of the stone sent to San Francisco was found useless for building purposes, but successful experiments were made with it, and shares in the company are expected to rise in the market, as the stone is alleged to be useful for adulterating baking powder.
