THE LATE MATCH.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l am an old sport, and have been ever since I was a boy, and I’ve got a sort of notion that you have seen a match before Saturday last. Now I want to know from you if it is square and fair that a man should be bailed up when he gets to the course, and not allowed to enter until he parts a shilling ? I’m not much at writing, but I would like you to say if it is fair. I’ll put it this way—supposing a match (some of them are only fakes to drag people to “ pubs ”) is made, don’t you think it would look better if those who “ collar the greed ” would advertise that there would be a fee for entering the gate of the course. My own opinion is that this sort of thing is not often done. I know it isn’t in the old country, and I don’t remember it having occurred in New Zealand before. I’ve seen big matches at home, and small ones out here, but I never saw the like of the way the public were diddled as they were on Saturday before. Tell us what your own idea is about this sort of thing ?—Yours, &c., An Old Sport.

[We certainly are of opinion that if a charge is to be made at the gates some announcement of it should be made, However, they do things of this sort better in the old country than in Poverty Bay.—Er>. P.B.S.]
