Captain William Davies, harbormaster, and formerly N iayor of the borough and a member of the ’Provincial Council for the district, died this morning. The deceased was much respected, and his remains will be given a Masonic; funeral on Sunday. The police have laid an information against n, young woman named Annie Stackpoole, whose dead inf ant was recently found under suspicious circumstances, for concealment of birth. The case comes on for [hearing on Wednesday. A young man named John Davis lies in hospital from concussion of the brain, consequent upon a fall from a horse. He is not ex pected to live. He is a son of the late Rev . Davis, Baptist Minister.
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Reassuring accounts are to hand from the country districts regarding the crops. Contrary to expectation little damage has been done beyond what a few days of warm weather will recover. In the north, however, bruised crops have suffered heavily and appearances are at present against them. WELLINGTON, This Day. Sir Julius Vogel was entertained at a banquet by the Wellington Club last night, Colonel Pearce in the Chair. Among those paesent were Sir James Prendergast, Major Atkinson, and the Hon- Walter Johnston. The gathering was entirely of a non-political character. Three hundred and sixty-one nominations for immigrants are to be forwarded this mail. The number for each district being—Auckland, 90 souls ; Taranaki, 11 ; Hawke’s Bay, 22 ; Wellington, 54 ; Nelson, 15; Westland, 7 ; Marlborough, 4 ; Canterbury, 50; Otago, 85; and Southland, 23. The amount received for fees was £]o29 7s 6d.. Major Atkinson leaves to-morrow for New Plymouth for a short holiday. The Premier is expected to return from Auckland on the 15th January.
