CORRESPONDENCE.
We do not hoi i ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by our correspondents]. :o: TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In your issue of last evening appears a letter signed C. M. King, complaining of the dilatoriness of the Roman Catholics of this district in not petitioning the newlyarrived Bishop of the diocese to send a priest to Gisborne. Now, sir, if your correspondent had taken the trouble to make a few enquiries on the subject, his glaring ignorance would have been enlightened, and instead of rushing into print on such a matter, he would have discovered that the Committee, ever since the departure of our late pastor, the Rev. Father Vaggiola, has busied itself in trying to obtain a clergyman for Poverty Bay. Directly the Bishop arrived in Auckland a letter was written by the secretary, pointing out the great necessity of a priest for the district, and asking that one should be sent forthwith. His Lordship very courteously replied at once, stating that it was his chief wish and desire that the spiritual welfare of the parish should not be forgotten, and that from the first time he saw our late pastor, who pointed out to him the way in which we were left, the interest of the place was always before him, and that as soon as he could spare a priest Gisborne was the first vacancy to be filled. If at any future time Mr King should be desirous of obtaining any information on the subject which he has so foolishly and narrowmindedly taken advantage of the press to acquire, by exercising |his limbs, the Committee will, I am sure, acquaint him I am, itc., Catholic.
