RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.—GISBORNE.
This Da y . [Before M. Price, Esq., R.M.] DRUNKEN NESS. An unfortunate inebriate who had indulged somewhat too freely, and had misconducted himself, was fined 20s and costs. DESTRUCTION OF TREES. George Jackson was charged with having, by neglect, injured a poplar tree in Gladstone Road—damages being laid at ss, John Townley gave evidence that he had witnessed the tree being knocked over by Jackson's bullock-dray, which was being driven too close to the trees. Jackson said he was perfectly prepared to pay the ss. It was iu vain, however, that the Magistrate endeavored to explain that the 5s had nothing to do with the matter, as it was a case for a fine to be imposed, but the only ieply was that he (the defendant) was prepared to pay ss. The Resident Magistrate, however, ordered Mr Jackson to assist the Government funds to the extent of 20s and certain costs. George was utterly disgusted, and left the Court grumbling that he couldn't sec the force of being summoned for five shillings and having to pay about thirty-five.
