[revter’s telegrams]. BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.—(COPYRIGHT.) LONDON, Dec. 9. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 2,130,000 quarters. The wool sales have closed. 126,000 bales were sold during the series, and 170,000 bales were held over for next auction. The sales terminated with good competition and with prices firmly maintained. It has been ascertained that the damage resulting from the W T ood street fire is not so great as was at first thought, The loss is not expected to exceed one million sterling. The premises of Messrs Ryland’s and Sons, limited, Manchester Warehousemen ; Silber and Fleming, warehousemen aud manufacturers have been completely burned down. Other premises in the block are not totally destroyed, but have suffered serious damage. The election for the vacancy in the representation of Liverpool in the House of Commons, took place to-day, and resulted in the return of Mr Smith, a liberal, by a majority of 379 over Mr Forwood the conservative candidate. PARIS, Dec. 9. In the Chamber of Deputies to-day, M. Duclcrc, Premier, stated with reference to a proposed establishment of French protectorate over Tonquin, that a sum of 9,000,000 of francs would be required to carry out the project, and announced that he would shortly ask the Chamber to authorise the appropriation of that smn to defray expenses m connection with the expedition.
