(by cable.—reuter’s telegrams). SYDNEY, Dec. 9. The election of a member of the Legislative Assembly for Illawarra tcok place to-day, and resulted in the return of Mr Stewart by a large majority. The Hon. Watson, Col. Treasurer, and Dr Renwick, who were recently defeated at the elections for Young and East Sydney constituencies repectively, were again defeated. The cricket match between English 11 and the local team was continued at Newcastle to-day. The first innings of the visitors closed for 217. At the conclusion of the day’s play the home team in the 2nd innings had lost 1 wicket for 25 runs. This Day. Intelligence has been received here that the crew of a vessel, 16 in all, have been killed and eaten by Natives of New Guinea. A life-buoy with the name Farione on it was found near the scene of the massacre, but the vessel’s name is unknown as no trace of her was left.

The cricket match between the Australian Team and 15 of South Australia, was resumed to-day. When the stumps were drawn the score stood as follows Fifteen, Ist innings, 117; Australians, Ist innings, 217; Fifteen, 2nd innings, 25 with one wicket down. The Australians first innings :—Massie, b 2; Bannerman, b 23; Horan, lbw, 6 ; Murdoch, b 30; McDonnell, c 35 ; Blackham, b ]6; Bonnor, c and b 8 ; Jones, c 10; Giffen, b 38; Boyle, c 10; Spofforth, notout, 12; sundries, 9.
