A WATER SCHEME FOR GISBORNE
The following is the scheme for a water supply, which will be submitted to the Borough Council at their next meeting, by Cr. W. Clarke. A careful study of the facts and figures therein contained will, we trust, induce public discussion.
Proposal to modify Mr J. Drummond’s Water Supply Scheme, and cost op W ORKS. Dam 165 feet long, to be made of earth, with a puddle wall in the centre, 6 feet thick at bottom, and to taper to 4 feet at the top, say 15 feet in centre. Width of bank at top to be 8 feet, the batter to be 1 in 3 inside, and lin 2 outside. An 8-inch syphon to be used for drawing water over the embankment. Cost of dam and by-wash, £lOOO. Three ofS-inch pipes to be used from the dam to the flat land in which distance the fall is said to be 200 feet Such proving to be the case would suffice for the delivery of 1350 gallons per minute. Zteuen miles of S-inch pipes from commencement of fiat land to Roebuck Road will deliver about 250 gallons per minute. One mile fainch pipes down Gladstone Road to the Government offices will deliver 120 gallons per minute. One mite 4-inch pipes for Childers Road from Roebuck Road to the wharf, will deliver over 70 gallons per minute. One mile 4-inch pipes for Palmerston Road to Bright Street to deliver over 70 gallons per minute. Half mile s‘inch pipes for Roebuck Road. At the termination of the B*inch main from the reservoir, a connecting piece should be fixed to attach thtee 6-inch pipes, only one of which, however, need be used at present, whereby the delivery can be doubled or tripled when needed. Stop valves will be required at each mile above Roebuck Road, aud valves for the j three mains at the distributing point. The total delivery by the above scheme i will be about 250 gallons per minute, or be- : tween 14 and 15,000 per hour; therefore, with a population of 2000, the borough can ' be supplied in under five hours with 30 gal- ; lons per head.
At £7 10s per tou from ship's side at Po veity Bay « £4728 15s. (The pipes to be proved to 400 ft of water pressure.) Laying pipes. —No place affords better facilities, and I estimate the cost at the outside at £175 per mile, say 12 miles, £2120. Beads, valves, connections and fire plugs ... ... ... ... ... £5OO Carriage and labor ... ... ... 1000 Engineers and staff ... ... ... 1000 I would also recommend that 6 tanks, each 10ft. cube, bo constructed at approved points for immediate use iu case of fire. These tanks can be constructed at about £3O each and will supply fire engines promptly until the force from the mains can be utilised. Six tanks at £3O £lBO Resume, Dam $lOOO Pipes 4728 Laying Mains 2120 Pieces, plugs, and store-pipes ... 500 Carriage and extra labor 1000 Engineer aud staff ... ... ... 1000 Tanks 180 Lighterage, and storage, say 100 £10,628 The supply of the present population as well as a very considerable addition could be accomplished within a sum of £12,000, and I recommend this subject to the attention of the Borough Council with the view of taking the votes of the ratepayers thereon. Mr Drummond’s scheme of bringing the water from the Waiotahi creek is the only one that should be entertained as its topographical and geological conditions, are such as to provide us with pure water uncontaminated by animal matter, and at a sufficient elevation to deliver with (pressure.
