At the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, Alexander McKay was ordered to contribute the sum of seven shillings per week towards the support of his boy, an inmate of the Kohimaramara school in Auckland—payments to commence from the Ist proximo.

Speaking of the fact that sparrows and larks will not touch grain mixed with coal tar, a Canterbury farmer says “ I mixed thirty bags of seed with the tar, and not one bird has touched it, and it went through the drill without any trouble. The “Hawera Star” knows of a case iu that district in which similar action will be taken. A bill which recites 3s 4d for receiving a telegram, 3s 4d for reading it, and 3s 4d more for sending a reply on some trivial matter, or other equally absurd and exorbitant charges, surely offers opportunity for the use of the taxing-master’s pruning-knife. The solicitor is not now’ a resident of the Hawera district, but he is still in the Wellington judicial district, and will kava te defend bit charges if he oae.
