(PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION). WELLINGTON, Oct. 25. Mr Henry Gordon, the recently appointed Inspector of Mines, left for the south this afternoon to inspect the Otago Goldfields. A man named Smith was charged at Lincoln with ill-using his wife and remanded, the doctor stating that the woman’s condition was critical. One of the witnesses described her as being half murdered. The City Council have convened a meeting of delegates of the Chamber of Commerce, Industrial Association, Working Mens’ Political Association, and other local bodies in Canterbury, to consider the advisability of forming a Railway League to press the construction of the West Coast railway on the Government. Dr Riley, of Havelock, died at Blenheim this morning. The town and the whole of the district Is now without a medical man.
