(PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION), WELLINGTON, Oct. 20. The Governmeni are making arrangements for the observation of the transit of Venus. It is probable that there will be three stations iu Wellington—one being at the Te Aro end of the city; the second in the Wairarapa district, and the site for the third has not yet been definitely decided upon. Tiie English observation party are expected to arrive in Christchurch early in November, and will probably fix upon Burnham as their station. Young Worth and the girl Davis, recently convicted for indecent behaviour in the Botanical Gardens, have been released pending the result of an appeal against the verdict. The ground of the appeal is that the evidence adduced did not warrant a conviction in point of Uw. This Day. With regard to the forthcoming meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association, the following entries were received by Mr F. Stevens, the secretary, up to last night : — Auckland 14, Taranaki 3, Patea 1, Wanganui 25, Marton 2, Wellington 51, Greytown 1, Napier 6, Gisborne 2, Thames 11, Nelson 14, Marlborough 13, and Christchurch 9—making a total of 153 from places north of Timaru. The secretary has received intimation th:it a large number of entries have been made from Oamaru, the Lakes district, Invercargill, &e., but these names Will be included in the Dunedin list. No reliable information is to hand as to the exact number of members who will be present. It is, however, confidently anticipated that the total will exceed 300. CHRISTCHURCH, This day. Among many rumors prevalent in town with regard to the doings of the absconding Hempton, is one that he was seen at Amberley a few days ago. It is also stated on good authority that a person called at Leach and Lewis’s stables on Sunday evening, and took a buggy, saying Mr Hempton would pay for it, and that he was going for a short drive. The buggy was not brought back till Monday morning. Another report of a more sensational nature is that Hemptun was known to have a packet of prussic acid with him on his flight. Later. Hempton, the Commission Agent, who absconded after committing numerous forgeries, wm arrested at Springfield this morning. DUNEDIN, This Day. A fatal accident happened on Wednesday at Adams' Flat, near Milton. About eight o’clock in the morning John Puskell, a settler of that place, was at work stripping a seam of coal. He had removed a large quan ,; ‘v of earth, leaving an embankment tun f et i heighth, when his son, who was work) g i little distance off, observed the earth suddenly fall upon his father. He immediately rushed to his aid, and, after doing what he could, went for further assistance. Dr Reid was ou the spot as soon as possible, but on examination found life extinct, and that death must have been instantaneous, aS the skull of the deceased was literally shattered into fragments. A store and dwelling house owned by George Bell, Postmaster, at Inch Clutha, was burnt down. It was insured for £9OO, but the loss is estimated at £350 over insurance. BLUFF, This Day. A man named Coggins, late chemist at Oamaru, who has been staying at the Bluff owing to ill health, disappeared on Sunday last. All efforts to trace him since have failed. He showed signs of a weakened intellect. It is presumed that he committed suicide, as he threatened to drown himself lust week.
