(PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION’). INVERCARGILL, This Day. A fire broke out in a three-roomed cottage at Avenal Suburb, at 2 o’clock yesterday morning, and extended to a stable adjoining. Both buildings, which were old, were consumed. The cottage was owned by J. Kemp, and was insured in the Colonial Office for £75. Nicholson, a shoemaker, occupied the building. A strange story comes from the Waimea District. A farmer named Alexander has a homestead and he got into difficulties, and the bailiffs were sent ujj to take possession of the stock. On their arrival there Mrs Alexander drove them off with a doublebarrelled gun. The party retreated for a reinforcement and returned next day. Taking possession they were, however, severely assaulted by Mr and Mrs Alexander. Warrants are out against them for the assault. DUNEDIN, This Day. A sad and fatal accident occurred on the tramway yesterday morning about 11 o’clock. The tramway, with two cars attached, was coming from the North East Valley into town, when a little boy named Fetters, about 10 years of age, the son of a shoemaker in tho Valley, was in the car nearest the engine, and attempted to get off without giving the signal to stop. He swung right under the car and the wheels passed over his neck and arm ; his head is almost entirely cut off. Tho Conductor was in the second car taking tickets at the time. A gentleman who saw the lad getting off gave the signal to stop, but it was too lute to prevent the accident. An inquest will be held.
A very sudden death took place at noon yesterday. The wife of F. M. Coxhead, tke well-known Customs agent, having fallen down dead in a fit.
A most successful meeting of theN.Z. Rifle Association has been held. It is promised that every district in Otago will be represented in the forthcoming arrangements. In the Totalisator case the Magistrate gave judgment for the amount paid into Court, that Goodison and others, five investors only, were entitled to one-fifth each of the amount registered.
AUCKLAND, This Day. At the Supreme Court on Saturday, Thos. Gorman, for perjury, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. John Walsh, B’2 years of age, undergoiv; a sentence of five years, died in Lytteltc >i Gaol on Saturday last.
WELLINGTON, This day. The revenue returns for the Colons’’ for six months ending September 30 are not yet completed, but will probably be so by the middle of the week.
Messrs Dick, Bryce, and Rolleston returned to Wellington this morning. With reference to the vacant portfolio it has transpired that Mr E. G. Wright was offered a seat in the Cabinet with the portfolio of Postmastei-General, but although he was quite willing to join the Government he would not accept any other portfolio than that of Minister of Public Works as being the one in which his servires, owing to his previous training, would be most effective. Mr Wright would have taken the Minister of Public Works had it been vacant. Mr Wright, it is understood, leaves for Christchurch this afternoon.
At the Supreme Court, Adams, convicted of conspiracy, was brought up for sentence, and in a lengthy statement denied his guilt, and contended that he had been found guilty on false evidence. Judge Richmond said the case was an extraordinary one, and he intended not to make any comments on it at present. There were certain points requiring further consideration, and lie would postpone judgment. Prisoner would be admitted to bail on finding sureties for £2OO. The breach of promise case, Miss Swiney v. Leybourne, Government clerk, commenced this morning. The action is brought to recover £3OO damages.
