[translation.] TO THE EDITOR. Friend, Greeting,—l was one of the twelve persons who we appointed to repre sent the owners in the Mangatu Block, 40,000 acres. Now, we were urged by i Pure and Mr Rees to sell that land so as tc. pay off tne survey lien which the Govern ment hu«l on Mangatu (160,000 acres). W ; Pore and Mr Rees told us that that liei amounted to £l4OO. XV e were severa months arranging terms, then we agreed t< sell the 40,000 acres to the Company foi

£2OOO. Thu Company gave us £6OO ami kept the bulanc** (£1400,>. Paying that with it they would pay the money due to the Government for the survey. It was on account of this arrangement that we agreed to sign to the Company. Now u paper has cornu up to Mr Brooking from the Government demanding us to find the money to satisfy u balance of the survey lien still owing and amounting to £514 *Bs. The Government state that all they have received from the Company has been £824. The account from the Government for that survey I have seen myself, and it only amounts to £13.18 Bs. s<. what the Company said about the lien being £l4OO was incorrect. Now I wish to ask where is the balance of that money, £576, gone *? My last word is this : Let the Company explain this matter through the columns of your paper that the Pakehus and the Maoris may see the way in which that money disappeared, or the manner in which it has been appropriated.
