[Reuter’s Special.] LONDON. August 7. The Australian orioketers commenced their match to-day at Canterbury against an eleven of Kent. The weather was fine and there was a large at- I tendance of spectators. In their first : innings the visitors scored 307. Ban-,I Herman was highest scorer with 02, and ,

only gaveonechance during his innings. At the close of the day’s play the Home team had lost 6 wickets for 81 runs.

In the House o£ Commons to-day the Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs was questioned as to the truth of the report which was current that the English Government had instructed Earl Dufferin to deliver an ultimatum to the Porte requiring that Arabi should be proclaimed a rebel before the Turkish troops are landed in Egypt. In reply Sir Charles Dilke stated that there was no truth whatever in the report. In answer to further enquiries Sir Charles stated that the Conference of European Ambassadors now sitting at Constantinople had no control over any military action that may be taken by England in the Suez Canal. Aug. 8, (Morning). It has transpired that instructions have been sent by the Government to Earl Dufferin at Constantinople that he should only consent on behalf of England to the proposed collective protection of the Suez Canal by the whole of the Powers being adopted as a temporary measure. The instructions further require that Earl Dufferin should decline to give an unqualified assent to the proposal of the Italian delegate to Conference, for the collective protection of the canal. CONSTANTINOPLE. August 7. It has now transpired that Turkish troops under orders for Egypt, will at present only proceed to Crete, where they will await further instructions from the Porte.

Aug. 7, (Evening). Further communication has passed between the British Ambassador and the Ottoman Government, regarding the demand of the former that Arabi should be proclaimed a rebel prior to debarkation of any Turkish troops for Egypt, and it has now been ascertained that the Porte has finally promised Earl Dufferin that Arabi Shall be proclaimed a rebel before landing any Ottoman troops in accordance with the demand of England. PARIS. August 7. M. Duclero has been entrusted by President Grevy with the formation of a new Ministry and has nearly completed his task. The positions of Premier and Minister of Foreign Affairs will be filled by M. Duclero, and M. Tinard will take the portfolio of Minister of Finance.
