PARLIAMENTARY.

[mb united press association.] Legislative Council,

Is’ the Legislative Council to-day, re? plying to Mr Nurse, Mr Oliver said Government were testing luminous paint for beacons, and would consider the possibility of using the electric light for lighthouses. The Council passed the motion by the Hon. Mr Robinson that the Rabbit Nuisance Act should be put into operation all over the South Island. The Government would at once bring in a bill to amend the one of last year. The Small Birds Nuisance Bill was read a third time. The Government assented to the following motion by the Hon. Mr Wilson, which was then passed:—“ In the opinion of this Council it is inexpedient that Justices of the Peace who have become bankrupt or insolvent should be retained in the commission of the peace, and that such justices should adjudicate in matters either criminal or civil. House of Representatives. WELLINGTON. This Day. The House met at 3.30 p.m. yesterday. Mr Montgomery gave notice that on the motion for second reading of the Loan Bills he would move as an amendment that this House does not approve of the Loan proposals of Government. Major Atkinson moved that this House do not adjourn. After the notice which had been given, and in accordance with Constitutional usage, the Government could not proceed with any other business. He was glad Mr Montgomery had made up his mind to combat the proposal of Government, and he regretted, in the interest of public business, that he had not done so sooner j but, better late than never, Ho would be glad to meet him in fair fight at 2.30 to-morrow, by placing the Loan Bills as the first order of the day.

Mr Montgomery said he had no objection to the motion. The reason earlier action had not been taken was because the Loan measures had not been down.

Major Atkinson replied that that was simply an excuse. The bills had now been down three weeks, and the financial statement announcing what the Government intended doing had been before the House nearly three months.

The motion was carried, and the House adjourned at 8.20,
