CORRESPONDENCE.

[We do not hold ourselves responsible for opinions expressed bp our correspondents

Sir, —You would greatly oblige by publishing this letter. Some few day’s since a notification appeared in the “ Herald ” that Joseph Price was the author of a letter published in the “ Canterbury limes ” giving some particulars of tho Southern Cross Company’s working ; further, it would appear that this has given great offence to the ruling power, and that they have in contemplation an action for libel against Mr Price for his statements. This is the reason assigned for applying for tho name of the writer of the letter ; but, Sir, it appears to me a great breach of newspaper etiquette to so readily give the name of a correspondent, without previously communicating with him and ascertaining whether or not ho was prepared to substantiate his statements, and further, bear if eallodjupori any legal expense that might arise from the publication of his communications. Now, Sir, I did write that letter, and beg to assure you that I did so uninfluenced bv any malicious, or other unworthy motive. 1 have yet to learn that anyone so desirous is to be withheld from communicating with the public journals, and giving publicity to particulars which may guide others who may not be well acquainted with the subject discussed. As for the implied threat of an action for libel, I feel not the least concern, and though some of those most closely interested may deem my letter as detrimental to the interests of the Company, I can assure them that I feel confident it will prove exactly the reverse, and may probably load to more desirable results than they expect.—l am, &0., Joseph Price. [For obvious reasons we have left out certain portions of Mr Price’s letter. Our columns are never closed to matters of public interest, whether we believe in the arguments used or not. We ask no favour, and shew none in such eases.—-Ed. P.8.8.]
