FOOTBALL.

The third and final practice match of the “ team ” and “ Ali Comers,” came off on Saturday afternoon last. The game throughout was very fast and hard fought, but tho Team had all the best of it—except during the second “ 25,” when the good play of White, Bull, Oatridge, and Wyllie, and Hill, Halbert, Parau, McLean, Chrisp, and Levisin for their respective sides, was very noticeable — and won rather easily at the finish by two goals and two tries to a touch-in-goal (by Chrisp.) Berry obtained two tries, from one of which he kicked a goal, Cook the other try, and Bourne the other goal by a neat drop. The Team, as a team, are not by any means an easy one to beat, and should give a good account of themselves at Napier.- Several, however, “ passed ” very recklessly again on Saturday, and must remember that “ passing"” the ball back when tackled, is frequently a serviceable piece of play, and has conduced to many a victory ; but that a reckleas throw back can never be good play, and a tflayer who is ignor- : ant of tho principles of tho game may j may thus throw away both ball anti i match together. To pass tho ball back ! into tho Landa of one of your own side ■ who has a chance of getting away with { it is commendable enough, but if you cannot do that with safety, “ Have it down ” by all means, in preference to throwing wildly back up in the air in tho fond, but generally delusive hope that it may fall into the clutch of a friend, and never sacrifice safety for effect,

The follpwing ,qre the names of the “Team”:—J. Berry, (Captain,) and Oakridge, half back ; Sherratt, threequarter back i Bourne and Cooke, back; Barnes, Bull, Ewen, Jamieson, Pavitt, Pavitt, Day, C. White, Wyllie, and Te Kani, forwards. “ All Comers—Morgan (Captain) and Chrisp, half back; Rev. Hill, and McLean, three-quarter back; Wi Paraone, Monroe Pepe, and Reqrcjon, back ; Baliantyne, Bullen, Ward, Levixon, Paran, Gibbons, Haibept, Eruet'a, liuraitiana, i' u Weeti t llovo-

mona, Donnelly, and Stark, forwards. Umpire, Mr W. E. Akroyd. After the game a meeting of the Committee was held at the Masonic Hotel to finally decide upon the Gisborne “15,” when the following were chosen:—

J. Berry (Captain), A. Barnes, G. A. Bourne, Bull, H. Cooke, V. G. Day, H. H. Ewen, F. Oatridge, E. A. Pavitt, Sherratt, 11. Te Kani, C. White, J. White, and G. R. Wyllie. Mr M. 11. Smith was appointed Umpire.
