McFarlane’s hall.

We paid a visit on Saturday to McFarlane's Hall, and wore astonished to find the progress made by Mr Thornton since our last look in. We are under a sort of idea that ho must use net an ordinary brush, but one that makes literal marks at once. The drawing-room scene is really handsome, and the nice contrast of colors and finished execution denote the tasteful artist. The proscenium wings, with their draperies of old gold, are, wo believe, an innovation of Mr Thornton’s, who has departed from the old orthodox red curtains. The Gothic interior has so pleased the old gentleman proprietor that lie seriously thinks of having a mansion built (of stone) on his country estate, and many of the rooms decorated after the style of some of the Hall scenery. (There's a chance for some of ou.v embryo Scotts and Pugins.) Ono carpenter we overboard saying that in the event of hie getting a job on the work that he would settle here ftltogother, order his tombstone, and bequeath the unfinisbol work to his son-—that is, if ha ever has one. But rovenoni d not muttbigi (Note—this expression is not original), the stage fittings are the most complete that we have over seen, everything working as smoothly us u well-finished steainengitie—eyary requirement both for dramatic and chorgl effect having bean carefully provided. Altogether this cosy little Hall will bo a credit mid ornaniund to our town, and another plume in the cup of our New Zealand splodgcr, Mr Thornton.
