In addressing the Grand Jury at the opening of the Supreme Court today, Judge Richmond expressed regret that the increased severity of punishment awarded by the Legislature to assaults on children did not seem to have the eSect of diminishing crime. In the Police Court, W. Rattray, Clerk in the Native Land office, charged with embezzlement, was further remanded to Friday. The wreckage found near Flaxbourne is ascertained to be that of a middle-sized wooden vessel. One cask of tallow is marked E.A. New Plymouth, July 3. A whirlwind yesterday morning did considerable damage, uprooting trees, blowing over fences and stacks, and unroofing one house and knocking down a chimney in town. Therqf was a terrific wind and sea on the breakwater, but it was uninjured. Bluff, July 3. The Ringarooma from Melbourne was quarantined yesterday and admitted to pratique to-day, as only one child was ill. Dunedin, July 3. Captain Kitchener and infant remain dangerously ill from the results
of the fire. A large sum has been collected for the relief of the family. The City of Perth, recently got off at Timaru, was taken into the graving dock, apparently not seriously injured. A dreadful fire occurred at Dunedin on Saturday morning in a house in Cumberkmd-street, the property of Mr Green, M.H.R. Three lives were lost. Auckland, July 8. Legislators are enjoying themselves at the Christchurch Exhibition. About 30 dined on Saturday, including Joubert, chairman, Twopenny, vice-chairman, supported by Sir Geo. Grey and the Primate. The building was thronged, and there was a firstclass band present. The dinner was a great success. A charge of embezzlement was made against Win. Rattray, formerly of Auckland, but up to date clerk in the Native Land Department, he having defrauded Government, it is alleged, of £29 10s. His parents are respectable. His securities are Messrs. Sheehan and Swanson.
The first Coursing Match of the season held by the new Auckland Coursing Club was completed on Saturday. The weather was fine, and the attendance good, with excellent sport. The Ist and 2nd prizes were divided between Mr Devines Perfume and Mr Gillands Petronel. Mr Bucklands Pinfire takes 3rd prize, and Mr Chirnsides Kaiser 4th.
The Good Templars of Auckland purpose inviting Mr John B. Gough, the veteran temperance lecturer to the citv next summer.
The Theatre Royal was crowded on Saturday night last in expectation of hearing Barlow relate the story of his capture of Winiata, the murderer of Edwin Packer. Mr Wilraott (Mr Halls agent) announced that he could not keep faith with the public through officious officials of the police. Barlowthen came forward and said that his appearance on the stage with his story would be distasteful to his friends.
