The Rotorua arrived here on Monday, at 2 p.m. On Sunday morning it was too rough to land at Gisborne, so some 15 passengers for that port were carried on, and will return by the Arawata on Thursday. The following are amongst the passengers' not landed at Gisborne: —Mr and Mrs John Bourke, Archdeacon Williams, E. Kirk, R. O. Stewart, and H. Glover. Hough weftthrr prevailed during the whole of the passage. The assistant purser of the Manapouri died here on Saturday last, just as the ship was ready to start. His name is McLaughlan, and he had only just arrived from England. The cause of death was heart disease. The Union Company intend putting on a steamer of large carrying capacity to trade between Gisborne and southern ports, in order to avoid the detention of passenger steamers. Napier, June 26. The criminal cases closed on Friday. The Wai-o-matatini manslaughter case terminated in a verdict of guilty, and the sentence was 7 years’ imprisonment. In the attempted rape case tho sentence was six months and 25 lashes. In the bull wounding caso the first jury could not agree, and were discharged after being locked up a whole night. The second trial took all Friday, and resulted in the accused (Neil Thompson of Woodrille) being sentenced to three months’ imprisonment.

Wellington, June 26. An Opposition caucus was held on Saturday last. Sir G. Grey was not present, but it is said he professed his willingness to agree to any decision arrived at. There was a difference of opinion as to the expediency of appointing a Leader, but ultimately it was carried by a considerable majority that a Leatler should bo appointed. Mr Montgomery was elected to that position, on the motion of Mr Macandrew, seconded by Mr Steward. Tho latter gentleman was unanimously appointed whip. The assumption of ;the administration of the Government of New Zealand by the Chief Justice, is gazetted. New Plymouth, June 26. The Native Land Court has given final judgment re the Mokau land in favor of the resident section of the Ngatimaniapotos. The Judge said that Rewi had only an inferior interest in the land as the chief of the tribe who assisted in the conquest, but that by no means enabled him to dispose of the land without the consent of the resident possessors, much less in opposition to their wishes. Oam abv, June 26. Mr Derret, purser of the steamer Grafton, died in the Hospital on Saturday from injuries received at the Harbor Works on Wednesbay. Invercargill, Juno 27. The Supreme Court was occupied all Saturday with the trial of P. H. Ford, bootmaker, on a charge of arson. The jury returned a verdict of “ Not Guilty, with grave suspicion.” The prisoner was discharged, the Judge remarking that in Scotch law the verdict would have been “ not proven.”
