A prisoner named Longmore, alias Elms, alias Elmodale, on remand for burglary, made his escape on the 14th inst, through the window of the room in which he was confined at the R.M. Court at Christchurch, in waiting for the opening of the Court. His case had been adjourned four or five times, and in consequence of his escape it had to be adjourned once more, he had not been re-captured. Th Auckland Evening Star says :— Mr Josiah Martin, believing that Commodore Erskine might like to have a short and succinct description of the fortifications of Auckland, has taken the trouble to include the whole in a single photograph. It may be interesting to know that the defence of port and city devolves on a solitary Armstrong gun of small calibre, which stands overlooking Rangitoto channel, on the the top of North Head. On the right of it is an empty platform, where its fellow formerly shared the position with it, but the missing piece of ordnance had its breach blown away during some experiments, and hence its place knows it no more.
