COOK COUNTY COUNCIL.
The usual meeting of the Cook County Council was held at tiie Council chambers on Thursday evening. Present—Crs. J. W. Johnson (chairman), Clarke, Westrup, Weston, and Gannon. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. Outward correspondence was read. Inward correspondence.—From W. King, asking remission of penalty, £5, for non-com-pletiun of contract. Refused. From A. Ohlsen, offering to keep the road from town belt to Alakaraka in repair for £52 per annum. Ordered to stand over. From Mr. De Lautuur, M.H.R., offering to co-operate with Air McDonald in t he interests of this district. Acknowledged with thanks. From Messrs. Gray and Barker, requesting that the upper portion of the Taraheru be cleared. Resolved that tenders for the work be called for. Cr. Chambers was granted 6 weeks leave of absence. Applications for office of Ranger.—W. Harvey and E. Harmer were appointed. The Government circular was then brought forward. Cr. Gannon then made some lengthened remarks anent the proposed toll gates. He thought the late poll invalid, as it should have been conducted undei “The Local Elections Act,” which gives the hours of polling as from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., whereas the polling was only from 1U a.m. to 4 p.m. He moved “ That the further consideration of the question of establishing toll gates be adjourned until the proposals before Parliament relating to local government, ami for providing ai l to local bodies, be disposed of. The motion was put and carried. Tenders forth© Owheta road. W. Stevenson (per chain) ... £3 10 0 W. King 4 8 4 W. Jones (accepted)... ... 3 4 0 Payments to the amount of £lO3 were passed. The Council then adjourned.
