The Steam Fire Engine.

A meeting of shareholders in the above was held last evening in the Alasonie Hotel. Mr A. Graham in the chair. The chairman read at length, a report of the Merryweather Engine offered by Messrs Parnell and Boylan, the cost of which, landed in Gisborne, would be £475. By request Mr Common detailed the advantages of t he Shand and Mason engine, the price of which would be £550 —exclusive of the cost of carriage. Air Common said he had no doubt the U.S.S. Coy., would as a donation convey the engine free. After a sotto voice consultation, Air T. J. Dickson proposed that Air Common be instructed to secure the Shand and Mason Engine. A question arose as to voting, and it was eventually decided that subscribers of £5 or less, be entitled to one vote, .and an additional vote for every other £5. Air W. Maude seconded Air Dickson’s proposition. Mr G. H umphreys moved an amendment that the engine offered by Alessrs Parnell Boylan be sent for. This was seconded by Mr Hall. Air Boylan explained that the engine he would supply was only of about half the power of the Shand and Alason one. Amidst laughter, the proposer and seconder withdrew the amendment, and the original motion was carried. AlrSkeet suggested (by memorandum) that the engine, if throwing water 2000 feet, could .
