In the House of Commons Mr Gladstone introduced a Bill providing means ’for the better repression of crime in Ireland. The funeral of Lord Frederick Cavendish, took place to day at Chatsworth, Derbyshire, 50,000 persons were present, including Members of Ministry, Members of both Houses took part. It is announced that Leonard Courtney, M.l’., and Under Secretary for Colonies, has been appointed Financial Secretary to the Treasury vice the late Lord Frederick Cavendish. The hon. A. Evelyn Ashey, Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade, has been appointed to succeed Courteney as Under Secretary for the Colonies. May 12. Mr Parnell is under police protection, in consequence of a threatening letter he received in regard Io his action in supporting the Irish policy of the Government. May 13. Mr. Gladstone is expected to resign the Chancellorship of the Exchequer. May 14. The Channel Squadron is under order orders to be ready within a fortnight, to proceed to the Mediterranean, in view of the state of affairs in Egypt. •

A canister, containing blasting powder, was discovered by the police last night outside the Mansion House. No trace has been obtained of the perpetrators of the intended outrage. Melbourne, May 13.
