A lot of money has been laid in Auckland lately about the two Segenhoes, the t wo Navigators, or Segenhoe and Navigator coupled, for the next Melbourne Derby and Cup. These are the only doubles enquired for. The Stud Company’s new stallion, Sterlingworth, arrived in Auckland by the Te Anau, and was taken in charge by Major Walmsley. Sterlingworth is a dark chesuut, with a tiny white star on the forehead. He appears to be in grand condition, looking mure like a trained horse than one who has just come off a 16,000 miles sea voyage, and us frisky as a two year old. The Christchurch Jockey Club’s report shows that £4,974 were paid in stakes this year, against £4,938 last year. Owing to the largely increased receipts from the tota'isator (£919), the revenue amounted to £7,304, the expenditure being £6,244. The Grand Stand, however, cost more than was anticipated, and the Club, at present, has an oven!raft of some £4,000, which it is expected will be paid off in the course of the next four years. The assets of the Club are valued at £ll,OOO. The number of stewards lias been increased from seven to twelve. An attempt was made to do away with a recently appointed handicapping committee, which failed by 25 votes to 14.
