TOWN COUNCIL.
Friday, 12th May. Present : Ilis Worship the Mayor, Crs. Tutchen, Brown, Whinray, Lewis, Townley, and Tucker. Mr McDonald. M.H.R., met the Council in consultation. The Foreshore Bill was introduced, and Mr McDonald said he was in favor of amalgamating the Harbor Board and Municipal Council. He should use his best endeavors in the public interest. Two separate public bodies would necessarily clash, whereas if the foreshore powers were vested in one body the interests would be concentrated. He would request Major Atkinson to take charge of the Council’s Bill. With regard to the breakwater he was in favor of Mr J. R. Davis’ plan, and would meet the Council this day week to confer on the matter. Mr Townley held that Gisborne was fully entitled to have the breakwater constructed by the General Government. The work was vitally necessary, and he thought a sum should be placed on tl«e Estimates. Mr McDonald said it would be better to ask for the money by a bill for private construction, than trust to the Estimates. To knock out a vote on the Estimates was a very simple matter ; to defeat a private Bill was not so easy. He suggested that the Council could give him assistance in several matters, notably the breakwater, subdivision of lands, and some other important matters. The breakwater was the grand object; it was vitally necessary to the interests uf the district. A special meeting was convened for Tuesday night, at 7 o’clock, to meet Mr McDonald. A vote of thanks was proposed by Cr. Whinray.
