COOK COUNTY COUNCIL.

The County Council, in accordance with a resolution passed the previous night, met Mr McDonald, M.H.R., at the Council Chambers yesterday, at 11 a.m., in consultation as to measures necessary to bring forward in the coming session of Parliament. We subjoin the pith of the meeting as follows :— That Mr McDonald is requested to apply to the Government for the carrying out of the following absolutely necessary and most, important works out of the public works expei - diture :—(1). That a breakwater and harbor of refuge be constructed on the north side of the Turanganui river. (2). That a railway be built connecting the breakwater and extending to Ormond, a branch line to connect at Makaraka and go to Patutahi. Also, that Mr McDonald represent to Parliament, the anxious desire of the Cook County Council that the I Native Lands Bill as drafted by the East Coast j As sociation should become law as soon as pus-: sible. ThuL these matters be brought under .

the notice of the following members of the , Legislature directly interested in this district, viz.. Mr Randall Johnson, Col. Whitmore, Mr 1 DeLautour, Mr Buchanan, and Mr Dargaville. That a combined deputation from the | Borough and Cook County Councils be sent [ tu Wellington to back up and support Mr : McDonald in his efforts to carry these meaI sures through. That there should be one valuation for the whole County either by I General Government or County Council, as I Road Board valuations, when more than one ' Road Board exists, are unfair on County ratepayers because nut. uniform. That all Native and Crown lands should I e taxed by local j bodies. That declarations for Native signa- ' I tures made in the presence of Justices or solij c.itors should be accepted by the Tru’t Com- , missioners. Great difficulty and expense occur* ' ing when required to bring the Natives from i a distance. This Council would a'so request Mr McDonald to ascertain why the £<>ooo I vote for the Waiapu Road has not been ex- , pended, and to use his endeavor to ensure the speedy carrying outuf such work. £3O,«HM.) should be set aside from the Public Works . Otli e. Wellington, for public works in the way of opening up metal quarry and other 1 works in this district. Toe district having 1 received very little money fur the prosecution } of public works, we strongly urge the Government to grant us a loan of £30,000 at 4 or 4| per cent, interest. The argument, for request- : ing a low rate of interest is that the New Zealand railways arc said to he paying works, and | they yield a per cent age of about 4. Mr McDonald in brief terms signified his willingness to forward the views of the Council as notified. He recognised the importance o.’ the measures, and especially of those touchi ing the construction of the breakwater, and 1 ' they would meet with urgent attention at his , I hands. I The meeting then closed.
