RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT, GISBORNE.
Saturday, March 18. [Before M. Purer, Esq.. R.M.] Winiata Taniwha was charged with a breach of the peace by fighting in the public street on Friday, March 17. Sergt. Bullen asked for a remand, in order that the attendance of a European named Dick, who was implicated, might be procured. His Worship remanded the prisoner till Monday, and ordered a summons to be issued immediately for Dick.
Bail was allowed in £2, and was undertaken by Major Ropata. This was all the business. Monday, March 20, 1882.
Winiata Taniwha and John Dick were charged with committing a breach of the peace by fighting in the public street on Friday, 17th March. After hearing evidence the Magistrate held that the charge w-as proved, and fined each defendant 205., also both to pay their share of the costs of Court. In default seven days’ imprisonment.
Esther Thomas was charged with stealing a piece of beef from the premises of J. O. Barnard, on the 18th inst. When called upon to answer the charge Mrs. Thomas was found to be iu an unfit state to answer the charge, having been evidently endeavoring to drown her sorrows in the “ flowing bowl.”
His Worship adjourned the case until this day.
