(from our own correspondents). Wellington, March 1. Mr R. G. Taunton, Under-Secretary for Justice, retired from the Civil Service yesterday, owing to the reductions resulting from re-organization, by which the Department of Justice will in future be attached to the Colonial Secretary’s Department. 200 Armed Constabulary, who were to be removed from Opunake, being transferred to the Waikato, it is believed they can be more usefully employed in road-making there than on the West Coast. The Stella has been ordered to convey them from Opunake to the Manukau, with all equipments. Dunedin, March 2. The Customs revenue collected at Dunedin for February is £38,235 ; for January it was £38,614 ; and for February last year it was £29,636. Greymouth, March 1. The Customs duties collected during February amounted to £2,388; for the corresponding month of 1881 the amount was £3,456. The gold duty collected here this month was £571, and the beer duty £46. Timaru, March 3. Dr Wray Hassel, a young Colonial, has been appointed resident surgeon of Timaru Hospital. The floor of a portion of the older Hospital buildings is to be taken up, owing to a bad smell arising from some unknown cause, in some of the rooms. Christchurch, March 3. The Hon. G. Richardson has definitely announced himself as a candidate for Stanmore seat.
