Lieut. Herman.
The benefit tendered to Mr. W. Hydes last night by Lieutenant Herman was very well attended, the Hall being comfortably filled. The first part of the programme was taken up by Lieutenant Herman and his family, who as usual performed admirably, and a deal of mirth. A somewhat novel feature and one not not notified in the programme, was the introduction of Mr. Pekama, an aboriginal who contributed to the evening’s amusement by singing “ Ten thousand MJles Away,” which brought down the house. Pekama visited England on the first return voyage of the Lochnagar from this port some years ago. The second part of the programme consisted of songs sung by Madame Stewart, Master Vandy, and Mr Towsey, in excellent style. Lieut. Herman announced thae he would give another entertainment this (Saturday) evenin, one third of the proceeds to be devoted to the benefit of the Fire Brigade, the Lieutenant paying all expenses. Lieutenant Herman displays much public spirit in the course he has taken, and for that reason alone—if for no other—deserves to be well patronized.
_ The members of the fire brigade met last night for the purpose of drawing up a code of rules, considering the steps to be taken for the election of officers, Ac.
