[From our own Correspondents]. Melbourne, Jan. 31. Mr Murray Smith has accepted the position of Agent-General for Victoria in London. It has transpired that the commandant of the Victorian Volunteer Force in succession to the late Colonel Anderson, will be obtained in England. The P. and O. Company’s steamship Mirzapore will be detained for a period of fourteen days, owing to a fresh outbreak of smallpox among the passengers, and it is probable that another steamer will be chartered to carry the outward mails on the 15th February. London, Jan. 30. The Bank of England to-day raised the rate of discount six per cent. Paris, Jan. 30. The Union General Bank has suspended payment in consequence of the recent collapse of speculation on the Paris Bourse. In the Chamber of Deputies to-day, a motion was passed approving of the prolongation of the existing Anglo-French eommeicial treaties to the 31st March next. A serious disaster is reported from Calais. A dam or reservoir in that city burst to-day and flooded a large extent of surrounding country ; thirty persons have been drowned by inundation of their homes, and a coniderable amount of damage has been done to property. Berlin, Jan. 30. The German Parliament which has been sitting since 15th of November last was prorogued to-dey.
