(from our own correspondents). Napier, Feb. 2. A smart shock of earthquake, more severe than has been felt for some time, and lasting several seconds, occurred in town this afternoon, at 3 o’clock. No damage was done. New Plymouth, Feb. 1. The Native wheat crops at Parihaka have been harvested, and the return is likely to be a good one. No fresh cases of fever have been reported in camp during the last two days. Oamaru, Feb. 1. Strong hot N.W. gales have been blowing for the past three or four days, and have injured the crops considerably. On many farms the crops were ripe, and the winds have shaken out large quantities of grain. The yield is not expected to average over 20 bushels to the acre. Wellington, Feb. 1. The mail steamer City of Sydney, with the December English mails, left San Francisco for Auckland on the 16th ult-, two days late. The Australia, with the December Colonial mails, arrived at San Francisco from Auckland on the 24th ult., two days before her due time. Dunedix, Feb. 1. The escort have brought down £40,000 worth of gold. The New Zealand Drug Company have produced the necessary fifty tons of sulphuric acid to enable them to claim the Government bonus of £5OO. An inquest on the Queenstown fire has been adjourned till Thursday. The evidence produced so far is nothing beyond what has already been reported. Wanganui, Feb. 1. This morning, at the rifle butts, a volunteer named George Henry Watts of Wanganui Rifles, whilst marking at the 400 yards range, was accidently shot by Bandsman Mettan belonging to the same corps Watts had removed the danger flag, and unaccountably came out in front of the target just as the shot was fired. No blame is attached to Mettam. The bullet entered behind the right ear and came out over the right temple, carrying away a large portion of the brain. Watts still lives, but no hopes are entertained of his recoverv. He is 28 years of age, single, and a furniture polisher. He was much respected as a volunteer and fireman. Acceptances for the Wanganui Club’s annual meeting close on Thursday, 2nd Feb.
