SPORTING NOTES.

(from exchanges.) The Melbourne Cup winner, Zulu, only realised 50 guineas as a yearling colt. It is understood that Dave Munu will ride the Wanganui horse King Don in the Auckland Steeplechase. WiHiams, the light weight rider from Melbourne, will, in all probability have the mount on the Peeress colt in the Auckland Cup. Mr B. Keene, owner of the American racer Foxhall, has offered to match that horse against Bend Or for £lOOO, or any reasonable amount. The same gentleman is endeavoring to make a match with Mr Lorillard for £5OOO a-side, to run Foxhall against Iroquois at even weights. A Sydney paper has the following yarn : —A gentleman, who seldom bets, was so stricken with the horsey mania that he remarked to his better half, just as he was starting to catch the train on the morning of the Cup day, “ I think, my dear, I’ll risk a pound on the Melbourne Cup. What horse shall I back ?” The lady replied, “ You”l lose,” and his three-year-old, trying to repeat mamma’s caution, could not get nearer to the pronunciation than “ Zulu.” He took the tip, and won £5O. Business in the Auckland betting market during the week has not been very brisk, which is probably owing to the| non-arrival of Messrs Walters’ and Vallance’s teams from the South. Libeller has been left behind at Christchurch, and the stable will therefore have to depend upon the Peeress colt to do battle for them in the Cup. The colt will no doubt strip a better horse in Auckland than he did at Christchurch, for it must be remembered that he was called on at a very short notice to represent the stable on account of Amulet breaking down. The stable have backed him to win a good stake, and the colt is now first favorite at 100 to 25, at which price a little business has been done.
