(from our own correspondents). Wellington, Dec. 23. The Premier leaves for the south this evening, and will bo absent for a few days. Informations under the Gaming and Lotteries Act, against Sir William Fitzherbert, the Hon. John Martin, and two other gentlemen, for taking part in sweepstakes on the Hutt racecourse, were heard before the Magistrate and throe Justices of the Peace this morning, when the defendants were fined £lO each. The Hon. John Johnstone, who was one of the Justices on th. Bench, dissented from this decision.
Auckland, December 23. The German gunboat Habiche, after a month’s cruise amongst the Islands, has just arrived. She punished the murderers of two German subjects by burning a village, and hanging a Native. At the Police Court, to-day, Wm. Weston, a bookmaker, was fined £5 and costs, £4 4s, for assaulting Mr Rathbone, proprietor of the Observer newspaper. The cause of the trouble was a paragraph giving a list of southern bookmakers, with whom it is not safe for the public to have dealings. Weston’s name not being mentioned in the list.
