CORRESPONDENCE.

[We do not hold ourselves responsible for opinions expressed by our correspondents].

To THE EDITOR OF THE STANDARD. [advertisement] . Sir, —Finding that during my absence from Gisborne some of my political opponents have persisted in the questionable course of spreading rumors and canards intended to damage me, alienate my supporters, and allure waverers, 1 take this opportunity of publicly stating that I am fully prepared ior fair criticism, and even possible condemnation, but statements clothed in the guise of friendship are lago like, more subtle in their effects than open and direct accusations. The commonest and strongest of these double-edged weapons used is that of depreciating my chances of election, which, viewed in a proper light, is only an evidence of the weakness of their position, and testimony to the strength of mine. Figures are facts, irrefutable, and assure my being at the head of the poll. My immediate supporters are aware of this, and I am prepared to convince even my opponents of this, if they condescend to seek the information. I am going to the poll, and mean to use every legitimate effort to head it, supported by many tried friends. I am, Yours faithfully, T. W. PORTER. Gisborne, -sth Dec., 1881. 216
