Auckland, December 5.

A young man named Alexander Donaldson was drowned at the Bay of Islands yesterday. Lyell, December 5. A smart shock of earthquake was felt at 7.37 this morning, the duration lasting five secs., the vibration was from east to west. Dvnedin, Dec. 5. The Agricultural Show takings amounted to £195. Tho mail brought news of the death, at home, of Mr J. G. Glassford, of the Matakanui Station, near Clyde. Greymouth, Dec. 5. Two sharp - district shocks of earthquake, the heaviest ever experienced here, were felt this morning at 7*33 ; the first shock the vibration was from seaward, west to east; the second north to south ; both lasted between 20 and 30 seconds. The houses were visibly shaken, but no damage done. The shocks were also felt at Akaroa, and telegrams described it as “ fearful.”

Kumura, December 5.

Two shocks of earthquake were felt here this morning ; the first slight shock appeared to come from the north-west like a gust of wind, the second occurred a second later, and was the heaviest felt on the west coast since 1858. Time 7.15 o’clock ; the direction was south-west to north-east, like an upheaving. Timaru, December 5. A distinct shock of earthquake, lasting some seconds was felt here at 7.30 this morning. Henry Whitcome, recently released from gaol, at Dunedin, and thrice previously convicted, was this morning committed for trial for a barefaced pocketpicking. Christchurch, Dec. 5. A tender for a new public hall, for theatrical and other purposes, has been accepted ; the amount was £BOOO. The heaviest shock of earthquake experienced since 1868, occurred shortly after 8 this morning ; the vibration continued 45 seconds. The direction was N.E. to S.W. ; no serious damage is reported ; but a small piece of ornamental stone moulding was displaced from the summit of the Cathedral spire. Wellington, Dec. 3. The Hon. Mr Oliver leaves Jfor the South this afternoon.

Nominations for the House of Representatives are now completed ; 241 candidates have been nominated for the 95 seats, including the Maori districts ; of these, however, two have retired, and 12 have been elected, without opposition. A slight shock of earthquake was felt here at 7.30 this morning.
