COOK COUNTY COUNCIL.
The first meeting of the newly-constituted Council took place at the Council Chambers yesterday. Present : Councillors Ferris, Westrup, Johnson, Weston, Clarke, Gannon, Milner, Chambers, and Common. The Clerk, having read the Return Writs, the several Councillors took their seats at the Board. Cr. Chambers wished to point out that as there was a probability of the validity of two of the Councillors’ seats being contested, he desired to draw attention to the matter, so that, should the Councillors affected thereby be aware, they might abstain from taking part in the proceedings of the Council. Cr. Chambers said the elections would be contested on the grounds that liquor was supplied in the polling booth. Crs. Westrup and Johnson, as members alluded to, said they saw nothing in the Act to cause them any apprehension as to the validity of their election, and they would stand the consequences. The subject then dropped. Cr. Johnson was elected Chairman, on the vote of Cr. Chambers, seconded by Cr. Clarke, the mover paying a high compliment to Cr. Johnson’s qualifications. We have not room for further report, the rest of the proceedings will, therefore, appear on Saturday.
