Christy Ministrel Entertainment.
The entertainment inaugurated for the delectation of the Napier Football Team took place in Macfarlane’s Hall last evening, and was in every respect most successful. The late hour at which the performance was over precludes our giving a detailed notice of it. Further, we do not think this necessary, inasmuch as all being amateurs, invidiousness is to be avoided, if possible. There were some capital songs, and the true “ nigger ” business was gone through with a spirit that gave evidence of a desire to please if it lacked ability to perform. Mr Ratcliffe took the premier position as “ Massa Johnson,” Messrs J. G. Henderson and J. Scott acted as corner men, and in their hands the success of the first part of the programme principally rested. The conclusion was marked by one of those “ Screaming Farces ” which, while they are exceedingly mirth-provoking, are quite inexplicable on paper. It was entitled “ Put up your thumb,” and we need hardly say it was precisely the kind of thing calculated to send an audience home in a good humor, which it did.
