Land on Deferred Payments.

The party empowered by the Countv Council to select a spot for the location of special settlers, between Poverty Bay and Wairoa, spent two or tkree days in their search, returning to town on Saturday night last. From what we learn there is but little land, in the vicinity indicated by the Land Board, on which it would be desirable to locate settlers, even on deferred payments ; therefore, the selection made by the County Engineer, and proposed to be submitted to the Board, is in the Waihou Block. It is there, that the 200 acres has been selected for the projected accommodation house. Mr. Winter reports the quality of the soil as being very good, in fact just the sort of thing to induce men with small means, to act in unison. The selection has been made with all the ulterior advantages of road frontage and timber, and as an instalment will be a fair test as to how the principle of homestead holding, and the credit system in the Crown purchase of land, will succeed. Should success attend the system, there can be no reason why other blocks should not be similarly set aside in other parts of the district; while the presence of these settlements will form a power-

ful argument with the Government to prose cute the making of roads—without which per manent occupation will hardly be thought of We shall watch the progress of this businesi with much interest. There are many amongs us who do not believe in small farming which may be all very well for those who d< not understand their work. There must, how ever, be small as well as large farmers, and ii we wait until the latter class move in the matter, the country will take a long time ir being populated. In another column it is announced that th< County Engineer starts on Monday next tc make selection in the Motu Block, and tha any persons wishing to join the party wil assemble at the Settlers’ Hot A on Mondai morning next, at 9 o’clock. >
