Narrow Escape from Drowning.

As the life-boat was coming in last evening from the s.s. Kiwi, a heavy sea struck her, and she broached to. Mr. Johnson, ighipping clerk to Messrs. T. W. Carr and Song, was sitting on the lee side, and a large sea breaking over the boat, he was swept out of her, and some didstance away. On rising, he could hear the others shouting to him to swim towards the boat. This he did, but just when near her, another sea caught her, sending her still further away. Mr. Johnson then gave up the idea of reaching the boat, and swam towards the Kaiti side of the river, towßrds tha rocks, and being an excellent swimmer he reached the shore. The same sea which caused the disaster, also struck Michael Walsh, one of the boatmen, washing him overboard, but he managed to retain his hold, and somehow or other got back. The accident occurred at about 5.30 o’clock, when it was perfectly dark and had Mr. Johnson been encumbered with an overcoat, nothing could have saved him. With the exception of the probability of his watch being destroyed, he has fortunately sustained no injury.
