CRICKET CLUB MEETING.
A tolerably well attended general meeting of members of the local club took place on Saturday evening last for the consideration of several matters of interest. Mr J. W. Johnson was voted to the chair. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The following gentlemen were duly elected members on the proposition of Mr Whitaker, seconded by Captain Ferris, namely, Messrs Lewin, Wyatt, Ratcliffe, Bonsfield, Bilham, Westrup, Weston, Chicken, Stubbs, Baker, Graham, Webb, Helyar, Caldwall, Braithwaite, Woodhead, White, Bolton, Root, and Edwards. The Treasurer laid his statement of the finances of the club before the meeting from which it appeared that there was a credit balance of £l2 os, after paying all accounts. The Secretary announced that a challenge had been received from Te Wairoa, and proposed that it be considered. The chairman said that while he was at Wairoa., Captain Smith expressed a wish fo him, to bring a team through at the time of the races. After some discussion Mr Whitaker proposed “ That the Wairoa team be invited to play on the Poverty Bay ground on the 27tli January, and the secretary was instructed to communicate with a view of arranging the same. The return match to be held over for the present,” Seconded by Captain Gudgeon and carried. A match committee was then elected consisting of the following members :— Messrs Gudgeon, Johnson, Winter, Ferris and Thelwall, to arrange preliminary matches, and to choose the 11 to play the Napier team on New Year’s day. Messrs Ferris, Parsons, Weston, Winter, Porter, and Webb were elected a committee of ways and means to collect subscriptions towards defraying expenses of the coining'match and the proper entertainment of the visiting team. It was understood that lunch will be provided on the ground, and a ballheld in the evening. The selection of the field for play next came under discus-ion. Captain Ferris proposed and seconded “ That the match, be played in Mr Breingan’s paddock at Waerengahika ” he thought it would be the best place as it was enclosed from view, and they would have to rely on the gate money, as an item of profit- The subject was well ventilated; and the motion ultimately agreed to. A general opinion of—regret was expressed that the sports at Makaraka would clash with the cricket match. It was thought to be most desirable that an event of this kind should be supported and witnessed by a general turn out of the settlers. In answer to a question, Captain Porter said the Napier team only contemplated staying the one day, so that it would be impossible to either postpone the match, or to have two days’ play. Captain Fems proposed that a deputation consisting of Messrs Gudgeon, Porter aud Johnson be appointed to wait on Mr Saunders so as, if possible, to get his consent to a postponement of the sports at Makaraka till the second of January. This was seconded by Mr Whitaker and carried. The meeting was concluded by a vote of thanks to the chair. [We learn that Mr Saunders very properly referred the deputation to the com. mittee.]
