Mr. Thomas Rose, of the Post-office, Liverpool, who was selected by the Hon. John Hall, in conjunction with the postal authorities in England, to succeed the late Mr. William Gray as Inspector of Post-offices in New Zealand, has arrived in Wellington by the way of Canterbury, and begun the duties of his Office. We need not say that Mr. Rose comes well recommended. — Wellington Independent. The Thames Advertiser states: —“We understand that a criminal action for libel is about to be brought against the proprietors of the Auckland Evening Star by Captain Fraser, Resident Magistrate of this place, for the statements recently published in that newspaper as comments on the late specimen crushing at Manning's, and the remarks of the Magistrate on the action of the police in the matter. Messrs. Gillies and Hesketh have been retained for the prosecution.” It is anticipated that the well - known dramatist and actor, Mr. Dion Boucicault, accompanied by his wife (Miss Agnes Robertson), sister of the late Shafto Robertson, and of T. W. Robertson, the author of “ Caste,” will, in few weeks, pay a flying visit to New Zealand and Australia. Mr. Shiel Barry will likely make one of the party, unless Mr. Boucicault determines to make his visit solely one of pleasure. Mr. Hollowky, the well-known vendor of patent medicines, wh 0 not long since devoted £lOO,OOO to building » wo hospitals out at Caterham, is said to have -recently consulted a well-known member of as to the disposal of no less a sum than tv>a millions sterling in works of charity.
