From London to Poverty Bay in Ten Days. (Specially Reported to the “ Standard.") < [By Submabine Cable via Austbalia.J OM(EO. BLUFF. April 27. T he mail steamer Omceo, Captain Calder, left Melbourne at 3 p.in. on the 21st instant, and arrived at the Bluff at 8 a.m. on the 27th. She brings 452 tons of cargo, 35 horses, 26 saloon passengers, and 27 in the steerage, for all ports. LONDON. April 13. The Australian February mails, viA Brindisi, have been delivered. Dr. Livingstone’s body arrived at Southampton on the 14th. In the House of Commons, Mr. Lowther, Under-Secretary for the Colonies, in reply to Mr. M'Arthur, said he had received no official confirmation of the cession of Fiji. The proposed production of all papers relating to Fijian affairs, together with the Commissioners’ report, would receive the attention of the Government. April 15. There is an agricultural lock-out in Somersetshire, where the farmers refused to abide by arbitration, and the laborers are emigrating. In the North the disputes have been compromised, except in the South of Staffordshire, where matters are still unsettled. April 16. In the Commons, Sir Stafford Northcote has introduced the budget, in a speech of some length. The revenue for the year 1873-4 was £77,380,000, the expenditure £76,500,000, including the Geneva award and the expenses of the Ashantee war. The revenue for the year 1874-5 is estimated at seventy-eight millions, and the expenditure at seventy-two and a half-millions. The Chancellor of the Exchequer proposed to take off a penny from the Income tax, and abolish the sugar duties, also provide for the reduction of the National debt by terminable annuities to the amount of £450,000. There would also be a contribution of a million towards the reduction of local taxation. After providing for the above, there would be a surplus of £462,000 still*in hand. There has been a terrible colliery explosion at Einstinfeed (Austria), by which 50 persons were killed. The ship Runnymede was obliged to put into Pernambuco, where she discharged part of her cargo, damaged by fire. Arrived : Great Britain, Strathnavar, Electra, and Cathcart. April 17. The budget is generally approved of. April 18. The remains of Dr. Livingston were interred to-day in Westminster Abbey ; Dean Stanley officiated. There was a full musical service. The Queen sent a beautiful wreath to be placed on the coffin. The principal pallbearers were —F. M. Stanley, Dr. Wainwright, and Livingston’s two sons. There were present several Foreign Ministers, the Lord Mayor and Corporation, a number of AngloIndian notabilities, and leading Geographers. Sir W. Fergusson, M.D., previously made an autopsy of the remains. The appeal has been granted in the Mount and Morris case. J. Holyer, Esq., Q.C., the member for Preston, has been appointed SolicitorGeneral. A Russian squadron is about to visit Australia. The arrivals of wool to date amount to 246,060 bales. The next Colonial wool sales are expected to show a decline. The corn market is firm ; home deliveries small ; foreign arrivals are considerable, and in finer qualities. Adelaide wheat freely fetches from 67s to 69s per 4861b5. Melbourne flour has sold at from 45s to 47s per 2901b5. Money easy; Stock market improving. Australian securities firm. New Zealand hemp lower. Arrived: Otago, Fitzroy, and St. Vincent. VIENNA. April 14. The Emperor of Austria, in answering the Pope, respectfully explains that duty compels the sanctioning of the Ecclesiastical Bills. The Papal Envoy has received conciliatory instructions. »
