Monday, April 14. The Autumn race meeting came off at Ellerslie to-day. The Maiden Plate, 50 sovs., distance 1J miles, was won by Mr. J. Matt’s Rangsi, T. Rowes Peer second, and Fawn third. For the Welter Handicap, 40 sovs., 11 miles, J. Milleson’s Marcella was first, M'Geehau’s Numa second, Mr. Edgar’s Echo third. Ponv race. —-Lainty, Ist; Tit, 2nd. Handicap Sweepstakes, 5 sovs., each, with 100 sovs., added. —Mr. Watt’s Parawhenua, Ist ; Marcella, 2nd ; Bundarra, 3rd. Selling Race, 60 sovs.—Mr. Watt’s Mira, Ist; Fawn, 2nd ; Numa, 3rd. The latter part of Ihe duy was very disagreeable, frequent heavy showers having fallen. Saturday, April 12. Mr. Buckland reports dairy cows in plentiful supply ; 35 head were sold, and prices were well sustained. Store cattle were in greater numbers than usual, and 300 head were sold. Young growing cattle command full rates. 128 head of fat cattle were sold. There is no improvement in the prices of ship-borne cattle. Best dairy cows, £9 to £l2 ; inferior, £5 ; dry cows, £2 "10s to £4 10s ; eighteen-months-old, £2 5s 6d to £2 12s ; two-year-old, £3 2s 6d to £4 12s ; grown steers, £5 to £6 15s ; fut cattle 22s 6d per 100] bs. ; store Merino ewes, 6s to 8s ; fat sheep 3|d per lb. Flour : best, £l5 ; household, £l3 ; seconds, £l2; sharps, £7; bran, Is 3d per bushel ; maize, 4s 3d; oats, 3s 9d to 4s ; butter, Is; cheese, 8d to 10 ; wheat, Adelaide, 6s to 6s 3d ; grass seed is in demand. W. J. Young, an old settler, and formerly one of the largest merchants here, was shot yesterday while duck shooting. At the inquest on the body of Mr. W. J. Young, a verdict was returned that he had been accidentally shot. Robert Stinson,- convicted of rape on an idiotic girl, has been sentenced to eighteen months’ imprisonment and 30 lashes. The schools at Grahamstown are crowded with pupils under the free school system.
