NAPIER.

(From the Telegraph?) ; ; We regret to hear that the large house that was in course of erection as a residence for, and on the run of, Mr. H. Pope Smith, Maruekakahu, has been totally destroyed by fire. On Saturday, the sth inst., Mr. J. M'Kain, of Petane, died suddenly of serous apoplexy; the deceased gentleman was apparently in good health at the time when he was overtaken by death. We learn that the construel ion of the new bridge to be thrown over the Porangahau river at Wallingford, is being rapidly proceeded with. Amongst the passengers who left Napier on Sunday, 6th inst., by the Nebraska, en route for England, were J. G. Gordon, Esq., and his son Captain Gordon, of Clifton and Karamu. We hear that Messrs. Watt Brothers have rented the section on the Market reserve, adjoining that now occupied by Mr. Boylan’s new store. It is said Messrs. Watt are about to build a large hotel on the ground, and thus supply a much felt want. We regret to announce the destruction by fire of the residence of W. Nelson, Esq., situated between West Clive and Havelock. The fire broke out at about half-past three o’clock on Saturday afternoon, 6th inst, and in a very short space of time left nothing but a heap of ashes. We learn that the Hawke’s Bay natives purpose holding a great meeting at Paki Paki, after the termination of the Native Lands Alienation Commission, to consider what farther steps can be taken in the matter regarding that which they had in view on the appointment of the Commission.
