SURVEYORS STOPPED BY NATIVES.
■’ 11 ♦ " [per press association.] AUCKLAND, Jan 9. Mr Carkcek, surveyor, telegraphed to Mr Bryce yesterday that he has been nnable to carry through the exploration for the railway line via Mokan, the Natives having; turned him back beyond the Ohuna district. He reports the country to be exceedingly rough. The New Plymouth correspondent of the Wanganui Herald telegraphed yesterday ;—lt has transpired that Major Atkinson bullied Mr Carkcek for saying: the Natives obstructed the survey of the Moknu route. The general opinion here is that Carkcek should be discharged. He says he is not anxious to again venture in the Mokau country, and does not care how soon his successor is appointed.
