PATEA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.
The annual meeting of the above Society was held at th|* Albion Hotel on Saturday evening. Present: Messrs R. O. Tcnnent, (chairman), Chadwick, (treasurer), Pearce, H. Gibbons, Sargent, Williams and Kitching. The Chairman staled that the minute book could not be found. Mr Hyams had acted ns secretary and ho had left the, place. The Treasurer read the balance sheet It showed the receipts to have been £99 5s 5d and the expenditure £96 7s Bd, leaving a balance in hand of £2 17s 9d. There were outstanding liabilities amounting to £ls 16s lOd showing a debit balance of £l2 19s Id. The treasurer stated that some £7 or £8 were owing for subscriptions bnb ho did not think any of that would come in. Chairman said they had some assets in the shape of poles, &c, The real reason that they were short last year was that they did not get enough for the booth. He understood that Mr McCarthy took £9O or £IOO, and the Society only got £lO and £25 for the gates. He thought they might look for a good meeting this year. The railway men were still in the district, and would probably attend. The sports had always been successful, and last year (lur® were over 1000 people present. He thought they might reduce the number of events, and still keep up good prizes. Mr Pearce thought they could reduce some of the second prize money. Chairman said they might reduce it to about £6O. If good prizes were kept up they would probably get some Wanganui men besides a largo number of our own peeple.
On the motion of Mr Gibbons, seconded by Mr Pearce, the balancesheet as read was adopted. Nominations were then received for officers. ' For the office ef President, Mr Tonnent was proposed by Mr Chadwick, and seconded by Mr Pearce—-both gentlemen testifying to the energy of Mr Tenncnt in carrying on the Society.—Elected unanimously. Mr Tenncnt, while thanking the members for their confidence, said lie should have preferred to have seen another gentleman elected, still he did not wish to sec the sports fall through, and he would act for another year.
