AN ELOPMENT FRUSTRATED.
The Wairarapa Star thus records an attempted elopement;— Constable Fleming, while going his rounds, received intimation that a full-bearded bushman, of iron-grey complexion, and on the liper side of 50, had taken up his residence during the night in a certain boardinghouse will) the daughter of a Mild Mild farmer, with whom he intended to elope out of the colony. Shortly afterwards he had the pleasure of noticing the father of the girl (who is still about twelve months from sweet seventeen) with his head twisting anxiously and as rapidly as a weather vane. “ Are yon looking for your daughter ?” asked the, constable. “ That I am,” said the agitated “parent,"colouring up. “ Then go down there, and you will find her in the embraces of a man that should be her grandfather,” said the other, pointing to the boarding-house. The hearty thanks that followed, and the wild look of joy as the farmer put spurs to his horse was something that the constable says he will never forget. Ills needless to say that the elopement was frustrated.
