In the House to-day, in reply to questions, Ministers stated that Government intended to take steps to secure to boroughs and town districts endowments of lands within their boundaries where there were any belonging to Government; Blank forms of petitions to Parliament, with printed instructions, would be furnished for sale at all Post Offices. The following Bills were introduced and read 'a first time :—Contempt of Court (Mr Tole), Election Petitions Amendment- (Mr Tvess), Charitable Bequests Legacy Duty (Sir G. Grey.—ln moving for leave to introduce the Sale of Goods Bill, Mr Bathgate stated that its object was to check the system of indiscriminate credit, which caused so much pauperism. , The Bill was read a first time. The Eight Hours Bill was read a second time on the motion of Mr W. Green, Mr Feldwick’s Workman’s Lien Bill was read a second time after a long debate. Sir George Grey moved the second reading of the Law Practitioners Bill, and it was read after some discussion. .
